About the lodge

Rooted in a tradition since 1840

Edelweiss Lodge No. 31 is a Guilford lodge of the Order of Hermann Sons of the State of Connecticut, named for Hermann the Cherusker, whose monument stands in Germany's Teutoburg Forest.

The Order of Hermann Sons

Founded to look after one another

The Order of the Sons of Hermann was formed in New York City on July 20, 1840, during a wave of German immigration. German Americans came together for mutual protection and support at a time when they often faced prejudice. The order takes its name from Hermann the Cherusker (Arminius), the Germanic chieftain who freed his people from Roman rule.

Hermann Sons lodges spread across the country, and Grand Lodges were established in Connecticut by the late 1800s. The Order remains active in Connecticut today.
